Other options
Some women may want to have something ‘extra’ in addition to the care they receive from another practitioner. These services are billed per visit and do not include the ability to access an on call midwife.
At My Midwives, we believe every woman deserves exceptional care, regardless of their individual needs. While prices may vary, we are committed to making our services accessible and affordable to all who seek them. Having a private midwife in the continuity of care model can lead to better outcomes, and we are dedicated to providing this exceptional care to all women.
We personalise your care package to suit your pregnancy stage and needs. Exact out of pocket costs vary and require a chat with our administration team. On average, Medicare-only clients pay around $4591 out of pocket for a hospital birth. Clients with Medicare and Private health Insurance out of pocket costs will vary depending on individual level of coverage and Health fund, please contact our administration team to discuss. If you have Private Health Insurance, please confirm the details with your insurer as well. Your costs may vary based on individual factors and payment plans are available.
Homebirths and elective caesareans have different rebates and out of pocket costs, please speak with our administration team for more information on these.
We also offer flexible payment plans to ensure that our services are accessible.
For those who have medicare, rebates cover a portion of the costs.
Private health insurance may cover the costs of private midwifery care. Depending on your policy and care provider, some private health insurance policies offer coverage for antenatal care, labour and birth, and postnatal care. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to determine what services are covered under your policy.
Continuity of care is defined as “gold standard” care and we package our care accordingly in a “Continuity of Care package” designed to cover all of your midwifery care whilst enabling families to talk to our team, work out your costs and budget accordingly.
Within this package your midwives are available for you from the moment you book. Appointments are available during the day and your midwife in call for you outside of hours via various mechanisms including face to face where needed in urgent situations.
Your visits last between 45 minutes and 1 hour to ensure your physical wellbeing is thoroughly examined and your emotional and mental health needs are comprehensively met. Two longer visits, one at booking and one at around 28-30 weeks are scheduled that last around 90 minutes. My Midwives team are able to order (and interpret) your blood tests and scans, prescribe drugs that you may require and organise any additional referrals to an obstetrician or paediatrician. Your midwife will also organise any appropriate hospital bookings for you to save time and will attend any hospital antenatal clinic appointments with you if you need them. The midwives are skilled to provide all aspects of antenatal care and we regularly consider your care within our team – so that we all know you – and also where it is required with a booking hospital (with your consent).
In labour, your midwife can visit you at home, or will welcome you into our clinics for early labour checks and will be by your side providing all your care. The unique element of My Midwives is that we have admitting rights to a range of hospitals and also provide women with birth care at home if that is their choice. This flexibility means that women can book with us knowing whatever pathway their pregnancy takes, they will ultimately be able to make the choices in labour and birth that best suit their needs and anything that may arise. Your midwife will work alongside a backup midwife and will work to ensure you are comfortable with the whole team. If you need any medical care or consultations during this important time your midwife still remains fully involved in your care actively advocating for you. After many years of admitting rights we find our ability to negotiate integrated care is refined and allows for a wide array of options.
After your baby is born your visits will be flexible and will be designed to address whatever is foremost in your mind. Your midwife will see you daily or more frequently in the first few days and then will provide daily visits as often as needed during the first week. Your visits will be tailored to provide the exact frequency of contact that you need. Postnatal care extends until 6-7 weeks after the baby is born to ensure you are settled into parenting and that your physical and emotional health are being prioritised. At this point we provide a birth debrief and coordinate care with your GP or child health nurse.
