Why Labour & Birth is Like a Wedding

Why Labour & Birth is Like a Wedding...

For years I have held the belief that labour and birth are like a wedding.

For years I have held the belief that labour and birth is like a wedding. It is just one day (hopefully less), which will change your life as you know it forever. Likewise, weddings are a big fuss about one beautiful day, but there is not as much emphasis on the fact that at the end of this (often expensive) day, you will be married, hopefully forever.

Nearly 15 years ago, I married my best friend, let’s call him Andrew. I don’t think that I was Bridezilla, but I certainly placed a lot more pressure on myself to have the ‘perfect’ day. I didn’t stop to think about what it would mean the next day, and the day after that, and so on…

Fast forward a few years, and we were having our first baby. As a midwife, I thought to myself, “I’ve got this covered”. Let me tell you, labour pain does not care who you think you are, or what you think you know, it still hurts!! Yet again, I didn’t concentrate on the fact that I was becoming a mother & that I would be one for eternity.

The transition to parenthood is not often talked about. At My Midwives, your midwife is able to discuss such topics as: changes in your relationship with your partner, looking after yourself and your relationship, the importance of date nights, breastfeeding difficulties, transitioning from one child to two, and going back to work.

Not that we all need or want drugs to get through labour & birth!!
